English accent and usage - Dr. Frank Gerace. The importance of the international phonetic alphabet, the IPA; I canít show it to you in one minute, but I want to convince you to get dictionaries that use it. Itís international and you wonít have the problem of having pronunciation of English indicated in a different way according to the different dictionaries you may pick up. Itís the same alphabet, you learn the symbols Ė itíll be good when you learn another language. Itís international and itís very, very important. This will help you when you hear a word; you can think about it, you can write it down in symbols, or many dictionaries have the symbols, and then youíll know how to pronounce that word. Please, please, please, Longman, Collins, and many dictionaries have the IPA, the International Phonetic Alphabet.
