Hi, my name is Andy Engel, Iím Carolineís Director of New Talent for the past fifteen years.
Rule number two of stand up comedy: donít be a hack. What is a hack? A hack is a comedian that does material that is derivative, stolen, or itís been done to death. As a young comedian, you have the ability and responsibility to see every hack list thatís ever been written Ė Google them. You can get the white hack list, the black hack list; theyíre both hysterical and theyíre both incredibly educational. Keep in mind; if you do material thatís on that list, youíre going to be judged five times harder than if youíre doing vanilla, generic material.
What I would recommend: is do material thatís original. How original? Material that is so personal and original that if somebody stole it from you, people would instantly know that it was yours, because you own that material - itís yours. It has your identity written into the DNA of the material.
