Hi, my name is Andy Engel, Iím Carolineís Director of New Talent for the past fifteen years.
Rule number three of stand up comedy: donít go long Ė canít emphasize that enough. When the red light comes on, you have got to end the bit, end the joke, end the concept, stop talking, put a muzzle on it, just stop - finito, done, gone, canít emphasize that enough, get off gracefully, say good night. Iíve had a comic that saw the red light and she immediately started doing her one woman show, you know, ďOh Jeezus Christ, I donít know what Iím going to do now, the red lightís on. Let me do another thirty minutes, donít let me [inaudible]Ē, no, no, no, just get off fast. As fast as you possibly can, the worst thing you can do as a young comic is to get a reputation as somebody that goes long. Itís almost as bad as stealing, which is pretty bad.
