Practice gripping and catching high balls -- an fundamental key of soccer net minding.
In the next minute, we are going to teach goal keepers how to catch a high ball.
To start with, we are going to go with the correct positioning of the hands. We want to do what’s known as the “W”. The “W”, if you have bigger hands like me, is fairly simple, thumbs fairly close together, finger spread out around the ball so we have tight grip and good control.
Ok, once you practice holding the ball like this, a very simple thing to do, we’re just going to bounce it and let it come back to our hands. So we’re going to get balanced. Ok, once you’re balanced, you just going to bounce it, back to the hands. Everything we do, we do it slowly, we do it correct. Down, catch it.
We’re now going to throw the ball up and catch it. So, I’ll do it for myself. Throw the ball up, hands underneath here, catch it. Want our elbows in slightly, and as you can see, we still have the “W”. Ball won’t always come to me, so when we throw it up we move our feet, correct position underneath it – ball is slightly in front of me, slightly above my head, elbows in, and that’s a nice safe catch.
