Trapping that ball to your body is vital as a soccer goalkeeper. Here's how you can practice.
Today, we’re going to teach goal keepers, in one minute, to catch a ball to the stomach. Very important for goal keeps, they get a lot of shots to the stomach. If we can hold on to the ball, our team will feel a whole lot safer.
We want a correct position with your hands. We’re going to have our hands out with our fingers down slightly to avoid getting the ball on the end of the finger. Ok, we’re going to guide the ball all the way down our arms, and we’re going to scoop it up and hold it tight. A nice, easy way to start – ball in one hand, ok, I’m going to put to my second hand, roll it down my arms, and hold everything in tight. And, as you can see from the side - everything is in tight. My elbows are together so the ball will not drop out the sides or the bottom. Ok, so you start with the ball out, roll it in – very simple. If you repeat this, you will become very comfortable with it.
Once you become comfortable with it, someone can throw it to you -you can do the same thing. If you don’t have a partner like myself, you can throw the ball in the air, so that way I would stand to the side, nicely just throw it just above your head. And your going to just catch the ball, nicely…hands out - and bring it in.
