Addicts share some of the personality traits of Heroes. Play the clip to find out what those are.
Studying the lives of heroes, when I was a monk for eight years, I discovered that they had a particular personality profile. These heroes were self-centered, they were willing to take risks, they would ask for what they want, and they were…they had tenacious perseverance, they would go after what they want with tenacious perseverance. So, self centered, willing to take risks, ask for what they want, go after it with tenacious perseverance. And they usually would challenge the system. People who struggle with addictions have that exact same personality profile - self centered, willing to take risks, challenges the system, go after what they want, tenacious perseverance.
If you’re wrestling with an addiction, you probably have the hero’s profile. The way for you to be in the world is instead of going around with the skill set of a survivor, trying to get through life, is to actually say, “That’s it, I’ve had it, now I’m going to make a contribution” and learn the skill set that these heroes had for asking for what they want, making powerful requests, and really being able to listen to anyone say anything.
Asking for what you want is the way to get over your addiction.
